An obese-free happier life

Shailesh Gandhi, a businessman by profession, had been obese since 1983 when he was just 25.  He consulted various doctors and medical practitioners to cure his ailment, but with no real success. Even if he managed to reduce some weight with great difficulty, in no time would he gain that weight back. For twenty two years Gandhi had problems with his self esteem, confidence, breathing, hypertension (that could cause heart problems) and knee joints. He was even affected with type2 diabetes that did not allow his sores and wounds to heal quickly.

In April 2005, he had a chance meeting with Dr. Mufazzal Lakdawala, a renowned bariatric surgeon. Dr. Lakdawala suggested surgery against Gandhi’s query on liposuction. Dr Lakdawala recommended Gastric Bypass and enumerated its benefits to Gandhi. Though apprehensive in the beginning, within a week Gandhi gave his approval and the surgery was done on May 2nd, 2005.

Discharged within three days of the surgery, Gandhi lost around 10 kgs in the very first month. This is mainly due to the surgical technique involved. In Gastric Bypass surgery, the size of the stomach is reduced to less than 1/10th of its size and the intestine is attached to it. Smaller stomach means smaller intake of food. This is the basic objective of the surgery that allows reduction in weight.

Gandhi was used to a normal diet, but post surgery this was not possible. Anything taken in excess came out by vomiting. Initially, Gandhi had a few problems adjusting to the dietary routine, but now he has been religiously following the diet prescribed and as a result has lost around 35 kgs in the last four months. On an average he loses 4 -5 kgs every month.

In addition to reducing weight, Gandhi was also cured of his diabetes, hypertension and breathing problems. Earlier he found it difficult to walk even for 5 minutes but now he can walk for more than ten minutes without much problem, though arthritis bother him at times.

According to Shailesh Gandhi, the surgery has changed his life completely and he and his family are happier now. He is able to concentrate more on his work and has got rid of the lethargy associated with obesity. “Surgery is the only cure for obesity”, says Shailesh Gandhi.
